The Athletics are rapidly closing the gap from what once appeared to be an almost inexplicable Astros’ lead in the AL West. Houston’s only competition for the division crown is the team they face now in the finale of the four-game set, where the Athletics have won the first three years. To be able to prevent the bleeding, then the Astros will ship newly acquired six-time All-Star Zack Greinke to the hill. The pricey right-hander is appreciating yet another brilliant season because he brings a 12-4 mark with a 2.91 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP into this afternoon’s affair. Since landing at Houston, after spending three plus seasons in Arizona, Greinke has two wins in a set of trips for Houston, including his very last effort when he pitched six full innings and allowed two runs on seven hits in a 6-2 triumph over the White Sox in Chicago.
The A’s are in the midst of a four-game winning streak and have drawn to within 6 1/2 games of the first-place Astros. Oakland’s Brett Anderson (10-8, 3.95 ERA, 1.26 WHIP) will be hoping to notch his 11th win of the season then one is via which, would tie a profession for its 11-year veteran. Anderson pitched well in his final outing but it had been to no avail because the Giants edged the A’s 3-2 in a match in which he allowed only two runs on six hits over six full innings of work.
