Derby County captain Richard Keogh was ruled out until the close of the year after sustaining a serious knee injury”as a result of an alcohol-related incident”, the club has supported.
The incident happened on Tuesday night, on which Derby described in a statement as a”scheduled team-building dinner with staff”.
The team has promised to hold a”rigorous internal evaluation” into the activities of a number of the players, while also promising to”support them using their rehabilitation back in the team and squad”.
“As a team, we cannot, and do not, condone the actions of a small team of gamers on Tuesday day,” read the official announcement.
“The players had been out within a scheduled team-building dinner together with team and while the majority of them acted responsibly and left around 8pm and weren’t involved, a little group, including the team captain Richard Keogh, lasted drinking into the night.
“They ought to have known when to stop and also ignored the opportunity to be pushed home using cars placed from the bar, and chose to remain out.
“As a result of an alcohol-related incident, Richard Keogh has sustained a severe knee injury that will stop him from playing until the close of the season.
“The players involved with the incident on Tuesday evening will be subject to a rigorous internal evaluation below the team’s code of conduct and disciplinary processes, but over and over any punishment they receive we’ll be expecting them to become involved with the excellent work the Community Trust will serving the communities we serve.
“We have been quite clear about our attitude towards alcohol and the players understand that at certain and specific times of the year they’re permitted a drink together as a group at a controlled environment.
“Those included in Tuesday’s episode know they’ll pay a hefty price for their activities, but also that we will support them with their rehabilitation back in the team and squad.
“We completely support the work of our mates at Drinkaware along with the unsanctioned actions of this small group of gamers is completely at odds the stance both Drinkaware along with Derby County Football Club take regards smoking.
“We shall be using this situation to redouble our efforts in highlighting the dangers posed by alcohol.
“We’d also like to thank the emergency services for their speedy help.”
