(CNN) — Renowned running back Cedric Benson, who jumped to stardom as a Texas Longhorn”legend,” died Saturday night. He was 36 years old.
Austin authorities said a minivan was attempting to cross a part as it ran right into a bike, CNN affiliate KXAN reported. A girl and both Benson were declared dead at the scene.
“Our condolences to the family and friends of former Bears running back Cedric Benson, our 4th general Draft choice in 2005 and manhood of the 2006 NFC Champions staff,” the Chicago Bears tweeted Sunday.
Hours prior to the wreck, Benson submitted a photograph of a motorcycle on Instagram using the caption”My Saturday evening,”surrounded by hearts.
Benson rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of their four seasons in Texas and is now the 9th-leading rusher in college football history, together with 5,540 yards.
His 64 career rushing touchdowns are second in school history.
He won the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the country’s best running back, when he rushed for 1,834 yards and 19 touchdowns. Benson also earned All-American honors.
“Really miserable day with the death of Longhorn Legend Cedric Benson,” that the University of Texas soccer team tweeted. “All our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and also our community of lettermen. He’ll be missed”
His school coach, Mack Brown, called Benson”one of our favorites”
“He was a real soul — among the roughest players we ever coached, maybe not the toughest,” Brown told reporters Sunday. “I, together with a great deal of Longhorns, are simply crushed.”
Benson also played eight years in the NFL.
He rushed for over 1,000 yards three times while playing for three teams, finishing with 6,017 career rushing yards and 32 touchdowns.
“Cedric has been a handsome football player for us,” Cincinnati Bengals President Mike Brown said. “Our business is deeply influenced by his sudden and tragic passing. The Bengals extend our deepest condolences to Cedric’s family”
Former Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson said he is mourning Benson’s death.
“Once he bought into the system, he was like a flower. He simply blossomed,” Anderson explained. “He gave us a component we did not have. We had complementary men, however Cedric gave us a missing element. He had been a good man. He was just one of my guys and it hurts. Life is too short”
